LDLC PC BOX Launches as Cheaper Steam Machine Competitor

French computer retailer LDLC is selling a new compact gaming PC called the PC BOX, starting at €999.99 (around $1,070 USD) in unassembled kit form. The pre-assembled version checks in at €1,039.99 (around $1,115 USD). The new desktop targets gamers who want a small-form-factor computer and ships without a pre-installed Windows operating system, allowing users to install SteamOS instead.

By comparison, Valve’s own Steam Machine console is priced much higher despite using older hardware components. The basic version of Valve’s console starts at $1,049 with 512 GB of storage, and goes up to $1,428 for the 2 TB model bundled with a controller. Gamers looking for more traditional pre-built gaming desktops can compare this configuration with the Asus ROG Strix G10 Plus.

The main performance advantage of the French desktop is the inclusion of the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT graphics card. The card has 8 GB of video memory and uses AMD’s new RDNA 4 graphics architecture, which supports FSR 4 upscaling and enhanced ray tracing. This setup provides a performance advantage over Valve’s console, which relies on the older RDNA 3 architecture.

The computer includes an AMD Ryzen 5 8400F processor, which has 6 physical cores and 12 logical cores based on Zen 4 architecture. The desktop also includes a motherboard with the B650 chipset, 16 GB of DDR5 RAM, and a 500 GB NVMe SSD. The entire configuration is packed into a SilverStone Sugo SG13B-Q mini-tower case and uses a 350W power supply.

The SilverStone Sugo mini-tower uses an elegant steel chassis to help manage internal heat while keeping noise levels low. For wireless connection, the PC includes support for Wi-Fi 7 to ensure low latency during online gaming sessions. French buyers can order the PC BOX directly from LDLC’s online storefront with home delivery options.
