Apple May Launch MacBook Ultra With OLED Touchscreen

Apple is reportedly developing a new high-end Mac laptop that could sit above the current MacBook Pro lineup, marking another step toward the company’s more premium “Ultra”-class products.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is working on a new Mac laptop with an OLED display and touchscreen capabilities, making the device the most advanced MacBook ever. Rather than replacing existing MacBook Pro models with M-series chips, this is expected to sit above them as a separate tier in the Mac lineup.

If plans go forward, the device could be branded as the “MacBook Ultra,” though the final name has not yet been confirmed. This system is expected to launch in late 2026 alongside major updates to Apple’s Mac product line.

The idea of ​​a touchscreen Mac has been floating around for years, but Apple has previously resisted bringing touch input to macOS laptops. Instead, the company has relied on the iPad lineup for touch-focused computing.

The rumored OLED MacBook would represent a major shift in the strategy that combines macOS with the display technology already used in high-end iPhones and iPads.

Reports suggest that the OLED display alone could significantly increase the device’s price. While Apple previously introduced OLED screens on iPhones, a similar change on the MacBook platform could place the new model in a higher price bracket than the current MacBook Pro system.

The same report suggests that Apple could introduce several Ultra-class products in the coming years. These may include a foldable iPhone priced around $2,000 with a large internal display and under-display sensors, as well as new AirPods models equipped with computer-vision cameras designed to provide visual context for Siri’s AI features.

Within the Mac lineup, the potential MacBook Ultra would represent Apple’s highest-end laptop configuration. Current MacBook Pro models powered by M-series processors would remain available, but the new system would likely target users who want the most advanced display technology and premium hardware Apple can offer.

OLED displays bring several advantages compared with the mini-LED panels currently used in MacBook Pro models. They provide higher contrast ratios, deeper blacks, and improved energy efficiency because individual pixels can turn off completely when displaying dark content. OLED also allows thinner panels, which could enable Apple to design slimmer laptop hardware.

Touch input will be another major change. While macOS was never optimized for direct touch interaction, Apple is gradually transforming the operating system with larger interface elements and improved gesture support. A touchscreen MacBook could also open the door to new creative workflows, especially for artists, designers, and users who already rely on touch-based tools on the iPad.

Rumors suggest the device will launch around the end of 2026, around the same time Apple renews its MacBook Pro lineup. Whether the company will ultimately adopt the “MacBook Ultra” branding is not yet certain, but reports suggest Apple wants to clearly indicate that the device sits above the existing MacBook Pro models in the lineup.
