DFI Launches INR556 Industrial SBC With Intel Atom, DDR5, Windows

DFI has introduced the INR556, a compact industrial single-board computer designed for embedded and edge computing systems. The board supports Intel Atom X-series and Intel Processor N-series chips along with DDR5 memory. It also supports both Windows and Linux operating systems, allowing developers and industrial systems to run standard x86 software.

According to the official specifications, the INR556 is available with several Intel processors from the Atom X series and Intel Processor N series. Other compact platforms are also focusing on AI and edge workloads, including a GMKtec mini PC using Intel’s Panther Lake processor with up to 180 TOPS AI compute.

Available options include the Intel Atom x7211RE, x7433RE, and x7835RE, along with Intel Processor N150 and Intel Core 3 N355 chips. These processors offer between two and eight CPU cores depending on the configuration, with clock speeds reaching up to around 3.9 GHz.

The board supports one DDR5 SODIMM memory module with capacity up to 16GB running at speeds up to 4800 MHz. Compared with many entry-level development boards that usually support only up to 8GB of memory, this setup provides higher memory bandwidth and capacity. This can help with workloads such as industrial control systems, edge analytics, and data processing.

Storage and expansion are handled through multiple M.2 slots on the board. These include an M.2 2242 slot supporting PCIe Gen3 x2 or SATA storage, an M.2 3052 slot with PCIe connectivity and USB support, and an M.2 2230 slot for wireless modules using the Key-E format. A nano-SIM slot is also included, allowing cellular connectivity for remote or distributed industrial deployments.

The board uses integrated Intel UHD graphics for display output. It supports graphics APIs including OpenGL 4.6, DirectX 12.1, and OpenCL 3.0. Video can be output through HDMI with support for resolutions up to 4096 × 2160, while the LVDS interface supports displays up to 1920 × 1200 at 60 Hz. The system can drive two displays at the same time using HDMI and LVDS, which is useful for industrial control panels, monitoring stations, and embedded display systems.

Connectivity features are designed for industrial environments. The board includes two Gigabit Ethernet ports, multiple USB 3.2 ports, and USB 2.0 connectors for peripherals and external devices. Several serial interfaces are also available, including RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485, which are commonly used to connect sensors, control systems, and older industrial equipment. Additional GPIO and digital I/O connectors are included for custom embedded hardware integration.

The INR556 uses a 3.5-inch single-board computer form factor measuring about 146 mm by 102 mm. The platform supports an operating temperature range of up to 85°C, making it suitable for industrial environments such as factory automation, transportation systems, and edge infrastructure deployments. It operates with a 9-to-36-volt DC power input designed for embedded and industrial systems.

Security and reliability features include TPM 2.0 support and a watchdog timer that can automatically restart the system if software fails. Because the board uses standard x86 processors instead of ARM architecture, it supports Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, Windows 11 IoT Enterprise, and various Linux distributions. This allows companies to run existing Windows-based industrial software without major changes.

Compact computing hardware is also expanding in the edge AI space, including devices like the Tiiny AI Pocket Lab mini PC with 160 TOPS AI compute designed for local AI workloads. Compared with hobbyist boards, industrial SBC platforms focus on longer product life cycles, stable driver support, rugged operating environments, and flexible connectivity.

Pricing and commercial availability for the INR556 have not been publicly confirmed yet. More information about distribution and product configurations is expected as DFI prepares the platform for wider industrial deployment.
