Lenovo ThinkPad P16s Gen 5 (AMD & Intel) Adds 16-Inch AI Workstation With RTX PRO

Lenovo has introduced the ThinkPad P16s Gen 5 in both AMD and Intel variants (ThinkPad P16s i) Gen 5, expanding its mobile workstation lineup with a larger 16-inch design built for demanding professional workloads.

The update combines next-generation processors, higher memory capacity, and optional professional graphics, positioning the laptop for users who need more performance and screen space than compact workstation models.

This model follows recent updates in the ThinkPad lineup, including the ThinkPad P14s Gen 7 Intel Panther Lake. Compared to the 14-inch version, the P16s Gen 5 gives more room for cooling, higher storage capacity, and support for stronger graphics options.

The AMD configuration is based on Ryzen AI PRO 400 series processors, scaling up to the Ryzen AI 9 HX PRO 470 paired with Radeon 890M graphics built on RDNA 3.5 architecture. This setup focuses on efficient performance with integrated graphics while delivering up to 658 TOPS of combined AI capability through CPU, GPU, and NPU resources.

On the Intel side, the laptop uses Core Ultra Series 3 H-series processors with up to 16 cores and support for Intel vPro. It can be configured with NVIDIA RTX PRO Blackwell laptop GPUs with up to 8GB GDDR7 memory or Intel Arc Pro graphics, allowing it to handle more demanding workloads such as 3D rendering, simulation, and professional visualization. In higher configurations, total AI performance can reach up to 672 TOPS by combining processing across multiple hardware components.

The difference between the two variants comes down to workload requirements. The AMD model is aimed at users who prefer efficient integrated performance with strong AI acceleration, while the Intel version offers greater flexibility through optional discrete GPU configurations for more graphics-intensive tasks.

Both versions support up to 96GB of LPDDR5X memory, which is unusually high for a mobile workstation in this segment and allows smoother handling of large datasets, complex simulations, and multi-application workflows. Storage support goes up to 4TB through PCIe Gen5 NVMe SSDs, providing faster access to large project files and reducing load times in professional applications.

The laptop features a 16-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, offering more vertical workspace for productivity. Higher-end configurations include a 2.8K OLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, 500 nits brightness, HDR True Black 1000 support, and full DCI-P3 color coverage. IPS panel options are also available for users who prioritize battery efficiency over peak display performance.

Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, optional 5G support, and NFC. The port selection covers Thunderbolt 4, USB-A, HDMI, RJ-45 Ethernet, an SD Express 8.0 card slot, and a smart card reader, making the laptop suitable for both office environments and field deployments.

Additional features include a 5MP webcam with a privacy shutter, optional infrared support, and human presence detection. Security is handled through ThinkShield features such as TPM 2.0, fingerprint authentication, and firmware-level protections.

The laptop is also certified for professional applications from vendors such as Autodesk, Siemens, and Dassault, ensuring stable performance in industry-standard workflows.

Battery options include 60Wh and 90Wh configurations with support for rapid charging, and both are designed to be user-replaceable, which is useful for long-term enterprise use.

Despite the larger display and higher performance capability, the laptop starts at around 3.87 lb (1.75 kg), keeping it relatively portable for a workstation-class laptop.

Lenovo plans to release the ThinkPad P16s i Gen 5 in May 2026, followed by the AMD variant ThinkPad P16s in June 2026 in select markets worldwide.
