Framework RTX 5070 12GB Module at $1,199, $500 Increase Over 8GB Version

Framework has priced its new RTX 5070 12GB Graphics Module for the Laptop 16 at $1,199, a $500 increase over the existing 8GB version that sells for $699. The jump stands out because performance stays almost the same across both versions, with the only real change being the extra memory.

This works out to a 72% price increase for a 50% gain in VRAM, following the general trend of GPU prices covered in AMD Radeon RX 9070 price trends. Aside from the jump from 8GB to 12GB, both models share identical hardware. Each carries 4,608 CUDA cores, boost clocks up to 2.4GHz, 384 GB/s memory bandwidth, and a 100W power limit. In everyday use, most games and applications will perform nearly the same unless they are limited by memory capacity.

The difference comes from the memory layout, tied to ongoing changes in memory technology reported in Micron 24GB GDDR7 memory. NVIDIA has shifted from 2GB GDDR7 modules to 3GB modules to reach 12GB total. There are no changes to the underlying GPU design, no additional compute power, and no upgrades to ray tracing or AI features. This makes the 12GB version a targeted upgrade rather than a broad performance step forward.

The added memory can still matter in certain scenario. Workloads such as high-resolution texture packs, large video timelines, and AI models often run into memory limits before hitting compute limits. In those cases, the extra 4GB can prevent slowdowns or crashes. For standard gaming or lighter tasks, the difference remains hard to notice.

Pricing pressure appears to be tied to current memory supply conditions, following recent developments in Samsung WD SSD price surge. Rising DRAM costs and limited production volume are pushing component prices higher, which directly affects modules like this. Framework has also indicated that the current $699 price for the 8GB version may increase once existing stock runs out, which could shift the overall value balance further.

Framework’s modular design still offers something few laptops provide. Instead of replacing the entire machine, users can upgrade only the graphics module. The Laptop 16 keeps the same mainboard while allowing the GPU section to be swapped, extending the usable life of the device without a full replacement.

That said, the price changes how the upgrade compares to buying a new laptop, especially against options listed in RTX 5080 laptops. Complete gaming setup with RTX 5070 Ti graphics and 12GB VRAM are already available starting around $1,899. This brings a full laptop within a few hundred dollars of the module alone, reducing the cost advantage of upgrading.

For users who already own the Laptop 16 and need more VRAM for specific workloads, the 12GB module can still make sense. For most others, the 8GB version remains the more practical option given how close performance is between the two.

The RTX 5070 12GB Graphics Module is available for pre-order now and is expected to ship in June. It supports Framework Laptop 16 configurations based on both Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen 7040 platforms.
