KeyBoy Advance Keyboard Opens Group Buy at $275

PromoType’s KeyBoy Advance mechanical keyboard is now available through a group buy. The custom keyboard features a compact 50% HHKB layout and styling inspired by Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance. Pricing starts at $275, orders remain open until July 22, and shipping is currently expected during the fourth quarter of 2026.

Rather than copying the Game Boy Advance, the keyboard borrows many of the handheld’s signature details while keeping a practical desktop layout. The case features a power indicator in the upper-right corner, a three-bar light strip on the opposite side, a speaker-inspired accent, a battery cover-style rear section, and shoulder buttons that resemble the handheld’s triggers. The sculpted case shape captures the feel of the original console without turning the keyboard into a direct replica.

Buyers can choose from anodized aluminum, e-coated aluminum, or translucent polycarbonate cases. The transparent versions resemble the clear Game Boy Advance models that became popular in the early 2000s. Several color options are available, including silver, teal, purple, orange, and multiple translucent finishes.

The 50% HHKB layout keeps the main typing area and a full number row while relying on programmable layers for additional functions. Optional split spacebar layouts give users more ways to assign shortcuts and layer keys. Every key is fully remappable through VIAL, and the shoulder buttons work as programmable inputs instead of decorative parts.

The keyboard is available with several PCB choices. Buyers can select a wired soldered PCB, a wired hot-swap PCB, a dual-mode hot-swap version, or a tri-mode hot-swap PCB with wired, Bluetooth, and 2.4GHz wireless connectivity. The kit is sold without switches, keycaps, or stabilizers, allowing builders to choose their own components. Both ANSI and ISO layouts are supported.

Typing feel can be adjusted through two mounting options. The kit supports both traditional top mounting and top O-ring mounting. A 1.6 mm FR4 plate comes as standard equipment, while aluminum, carbon fiber, polycarbonate, and polypropylene plates are available separately. PromoType has added Poron-supported bottom pillars around the stepped spacebar to reduce resonance during typing.

The entry-level version starts at $275 with an anodized aluminum case and a wired soldered PCB. Choosing a wired hot-swap PCB adds $15, while the tri-mode wireless version adds $40. A translucent polycarbonate case costs another $30, placing a fully equipped standard configuration at around $340 before optional accessories.

PromoType states that the current group buy pricing is around 20% below the planned retail price. Orders remain open until July 22, while shipping is currently estimated for Q4 2026, although production schedules can change before deliveries begin.
