MSI has unveiled a compact desktop capable of local AI workloads that normally require a rack of server GPUs. By leveraging AMD’s new “Strix Halo” architecture and multi-system clustering, the new PRO MAX EDGE AI+ allows developers to run massive language models with up to 670 billion parameters locally, bypassing traditional video memory bottlenecks and avoiding cloud data risks.
At the core of the system is the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395, a flagship 16-core, 32-thread processor that outputs up to 126 TOPS of total AI performance. Instead of relying on a discrete graphics card, the system taps into a massive integrated Radeon 8060S GPU featuring 40 Compute Units, paired alongside an XDNA 2 NPU that handles dedicated AI throughput at 50 TOPS.
The most significant engineering feat of the PRO MAX EDGE AI+ is its memory allocation. Most local AI inference is limited by the VRAM capacity of discrete graphics cards, which typically caps out at 24GB on consumer hardware.
MSI circumvents this entirely by utilizing Variable Graphics Memory (VGM). The desktop comes equipped with up to 128GB of LPDDR5X-8000 unified memory, allowing the system to dynamically allocate an unprecedented 96GB directly to graphics memory. This localized memory pool enables the ultra-compact desktop to natively run large language models with up to 120 billion parameters completely offline on a single machine.
For enterprise developers or researchers needing even more overhead, MSI engineered the system to support multi-system clustering. Scaling resources across multiple PRO MAX EDGE AI+ nodes pushes the inference capability up to 670 billion parameters, allowing teams to handle datacenter-grade AI workloads entirely on-premise.
Packing this level of memory allocation into a 4-liter chassis requires aggressive heat management. To prevent thermal throttling during sustained, hours-long inference sessions, MSI utilizes its proprietary Frozr AI Pro cooling system and Glacier Armor thermal design to maintain the Strix Halo chip’s stability.
While MSI has confirmed the technical ceilings of the new platform, the company has not yet detailed enterprise pricing or launch availability for the PRO MAX EDGE AI+ line.
