Sony Raises Refurbished PS5 Slim Prices by $100 as $399 Consoles Disappear in the US

Buying a PlayStation 5 now costs more than before. Sony has increased the price of refurbished PS5 Slim consoles by $100, and at the same time, cheaper $399 new consoles are no longer widely available in the US. This means the lowest real price to enter the PS5 ecosystem has moved up.

The refurbished PS5 Slim Digital Edition now costs $499, while the disc version is priced at $549. Sony has not officially explained this change, so the exact reason is still unknown.

Original PS5 (Refurbished)$399$399No change

At the same time, new PS5 Digital Edition consoles are now selling for around $599 in most cases. Since the price difference between refurbished and new models is now about $100, the value gap has become much smaller.

The PS5 Slim does not bring better gaming performance. It uses the same processor and graphics system as the original model. The main changes are a smaller design, more storage, and updated front ports.

Refurbished consoles are older units that have already been made and later repaired and tested. They are not tied to current manufacturing costs in the same way as new consoles, so rising production costs do not fully explain the higher pricing.

Sony had already raised the price of new PS5 consoles earlier, which shows a clear trend.

Refurbished consoles are limited in number. Increasing the price can slow down demand and keep stock available longer. It also keeps refurbished models closer in price to new ones.

At current prices, refurbished PS5 Slim models no longer offer a strong value advantage over new consoles. When the difference is small, many buyers are likely to choose a brand-new system instead of a refurbished one.

The original refurbished PS5 at $399 is still the lowest-cost option, but it comes with less storage and an older design. For buyers on a tight budget, it may now be the only affordable way to get a PS5.

In earlier console generations, prices usually dropped over time. This time, the pattern is different. PS5 prices have increased instead of decreasing, which shows how supply limits and market conditions are changing the usual trend.

It is not clear if prices will go down again soon. Sony has not shared any plans to bring back cheaper models. For now, buying a PS5 costs more than it did before, and budget options are becoming harder to find.

The PlayStation 5 is no longer becoming cheaper over time. Instead, it is staying at a higher price level, even for refurbished units.
