LG Installs Intrusive McAfee Adware on Gaming Monitors

LG has faced heavy criticism after a public investigation revealed that the company secretly downloads and installs adware on computers connected to its gaming displays. When users plug in an LG UltraGear monitor, the Windows Update service downloads a program named LG Monitor App Installer without user consent. The utility then displays intrusive pop-up ads encouraging users to purchase a paid McAfee Premium antivirus subscription for $39.99 per year.

In addition to presenting ads, the installer program requests full access to sensitive computer resources, geolocation data, contacts, and transaction history. Privacy advocates note that these expansive permissions are unnecessary for a utility meant to configure a basic desktop display. Because of these security concerns, some analysts suggest blocking the installer through local firewall policies.

The controversy expands to the manufacturer’s television lineup, where webOS updates include new voice-processing algorithms. The updated user agreement shifts legal responsibility for compliance with eavesdropping laws entirely onto the purchaser of the smart TV. Owners must obtain consent from all family members and house guests before the TV can record and process their voices.

If a TV owner refuses to agree to the new voice-recording terms, the company threatens to restrict access to critical security updates. This aggressive policy has drawn attention to past privacy disputes involving the brand’s display products. For instance, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton previously filed a lawsuit against the manufacturer over automatic content recognition technology.

The lawsuit alleged that the integrated TV software secretly captured screen captures every 500 milliseconds (0.5 seconds) to sell consumer profiles to advertising networks. Due to these tracking practices, independent information security experts advise completely disconnecting LG televisions and monitors from the internet. Affected display owners are currently looking for alternative ways to update their firmware offline.
