Redditor Orders Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Receives 9800X3D Instead

A Ukrainian PC builder received a new Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor after ordering the older Ryzen 7 7800X3D from a local retail store. The buyer was initially torn between buying the older Ryzen 7 7800X3D or upgrading to the newer generation. The mistake resulted in an unexpected $125 USD (about 900 Yuan) hardware upgrade for free.

The buyer had recently bent the pins on their previous motherboard during a CPU cooler installation. Deciding to replace both the dead motherboard and the processor, they placed an order for the cheaper older-generation chip to fit their budget.

The builder validated the processor in a functional PC configuration.

The customer paid 14,400 UAH (about $350 USD or 2,540 Yuan) for a tray version of the older chip. The local store listed the newer model for 19,500 UAH (about $475 USD or 3,450 Yuan) at the time of purchase. When the courier delivered the order, the package contained the newer chip instead.

Upon opening the packaging, the buyer discovered that the retailer sent the newer Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor instead. While comments warned that the shipment might be a fake chip or a return swap scam, the user confirmed that the desktop booted up perfectly on the first try.

The builder verified the chip using a Thermalright Phantom Spirit SE 120 ARGB cooler and an RTX 5070 Ti graphics card. Because the buyer signed the delivery invoice, the store cannot easily claim the upgraded hardware back. However, the user notes that claiming warranty services might be complicated because the paper confirmation lists a different processor.

This case represents a rare shipping mix-up in favor of the consumer, which stands in contrast to common CPU scam reports. Enthusiasts will likely follow the buyer’s forum updates to see how the local store handles the warranty discrepancy.
