SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD Reaches 4,000 MB/s, 8TB

SanDisk has introduced a new generation of portable SSDs built for creators, professionals, and everyday users who work with large files and AI-powered tools. The 2026 SanDisk portable SSD lineup expands the company’s external NVMe storage range with faster speeds, bigger capacities, and stronger durability features. The new models are designed to meet the rising demand for high-performance USB-based external storage.

The updated lineup includes three models: the SanDisk Portable SSD, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, and the SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD. According to the SanDisk, these drives are made to handle growing file sizes from high-resolution photography, 4K and 12K video production, AI-generated content, and multi-device creative workflows.

At the top of the lineup, the SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD delivers read speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800 MB/s on select capacities. This makes it one of the fastest USB-connected portable SSDs currently announced. While SanDisk has not specified the exact interface standard, speeds at this level typically suggest high-bandwidth USB connections paired with NVMe storage technology.

The Extreme PRO model will be available in 2TB and 4TB versions. An 8TB version is expected in the second half of 2026. SanDisk says the drive can transfer up to 10 minutes of 12K video in under one minute under internal testing conditions. This positions the drive as a professional-grade external SSD suitable for real-time editing and fast media transfers.

The Extreme PRO Portable SSD also features IP65 water and dust resistance, up to three meters of drop protection, and 256-bit AES hardware encryption with password protection. These features make it suitable for filmmakers, photographers, and production teams who need secure and rugged high-speed storage on location.

The mid-range SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is aimed at photographers and video editors who want fast transfer speeds but do not need the highest performance tier. It offers read speeds of up to 2,000 MB/s in capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB, with a 500GB version planned. SanDisk says the drive can move up to 1,000 high-resolution photos in under 60 seconds based on internal testing.

The Extreme Portable SSD includes IP65 water and dust resistance, three-meter drop protection, and 256-bit AES hardware encryption. With storage options up to 4TB, it competes in the popular high-capacity portable SSD segment used by creative professionals.

The standard SanDisk Portable SSD provides read speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s and comes in capacities from 500GB to 2TB. This model is designed for students, home users, and office backups. It offers two-meter drop protection but does not include IP65 certification or built-in hardware encryption. It serves as an entry-level external SSD for everyday storage needs.

The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD is available now starting at $259.99 for the 1TB version. The 2TB and 4TB models are also shipping. The Extreme PRO Portable SSD models, including the 2TB, 4TB, and upcoming 8TB versions, are expected to launch later in 2026. The Extreme and Extreme PRO models come with five-year limited warranties, while the standard Portable SSD includes a three-year limited warranty.

The drives are compatible with Windows 10 and later, macOS 13 and later, as well as supported Android, iOS, and iPadOS devices that allow external storage connections. This ensures broad support across laptops, tablets, and mobile production setups.

With read speeds reaching up to 4,000 MB/s and capacities expanding to 8TB, SanDisk’s latest portable SSD lineup targets users who rely on external drives as primary working storage rather than simple backups. Higher bandwidth, larger capacities, and added durability features position these drives for demanding tasks such as on-location video editing, large project transfers, and high-speed data workflows across multiple devices.

SanDisk has clearly separated its lineup into three performance tiers. Instead of making small updates to one product line, the company created distinct levels based on speed, durability, security, and maximum capacity. Storage options range from 500GB to 8TB. This approach reflects how creators now use portable SSDs as active working drives rather than simple backup storage.

With portable SSD speeds now approaching internal NVMe SSD performance, competition in the high-speed external storage market is increasing. Claimed speeds of up to 4,000 MB/s place the SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD in the premium category for professional portable storage. This helps narrow the performance gap between internal PCIe storage and external USB drives for field editing and fast project transfers.
