Microsoft Surface has introduced the Surface Laptop Ultra, a new high-performance laptop designed for developers, creators, engineers, and AI professionals. The company describes it as the most powerful Surface laptop it has ever released, combining advanced AI capabilities, workstation-level performance, and a premium design for demanding professional workloads.
The new Surface Laptop Ultra is powered by NVIDIA’s RTX Spark graphics technology and supports up to 128GB of unified memory. According to Microsoft, the laptop is built to handle demanding workloads such as local AI inference, software development, 3D rendering, video production, and large-scale content creation without depending heavily on cloud-based services.
The launch also reflects Microsoft’s growing focus on AI-powered computing as more users look to run advanced AI tools directly on their devices. By allowing the CPU and GPU to share memory resources dynamically, Microsoft says the laptop can handle larger datasets, AI models, and creative workloads more efficiently while helping reduce latency and keep sensitive data on the device.
The Surface Laptop Ultra is rated for up to one petaflop of AI performance and can run AI models with as many as 120 billion parameters directly on the device, placing it among a new generation of systems built around large local AI workloads. That kind of hardware could be especially useful for developers, researchers, and professionals who regularly work with AI applications, machine learning projects, and other demanding workloads.
A 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with mini-LED technology is a feature of the Surface Laptop Ultra. High-brightness displays are becoming more common in premium productivity and creator-focused devices. According to Microsoft, the display has a 3:2 aspect ratio, 262 pixels per inch, and a maximum HDR brightness of 2,000 nits. Photographers, video editors, designers, and other creative professionals who need precise colour reproduction can utilise it since, according to the firm, it is the brightest display ever used in a Surface tablet.
To handle demanding workloads more effectively, Microsoft has introduced a new cooling system for the Surface Laptop Ultra. Advanced cooling solutions are becoming increasingly important as AI-focused laptops adopt more powerful CPUs and GPUs. The company claims it offers up to 2.5 times the cooling capacity of the 15-inch Surface Laptop 7th Edition. The upgraded thermal design is intended to keep performance stable during long rendering sessions, software builds, AI processing, and other intensive tasks.
Microsoft has also updated the touchpad, adding what it describes as the largest Precision Haptic Touchpad ever used in a Surface laptop. The laptop also includes a full-size SD card reader, HDMI output, USB-C, USB-A, and a headphone jack. With these built-in ports, users are less likely to need extra adapters, which can be especially useful for creators and professionals who connect multiple devices regularly.
Microsoft is also putting more focus on repairability with the Surface Laptop Ultra. The laptop features a replaceable SSD, official repair guides, and access to replacement parts. Repairability and user-upgrade options are receiving greater attention across premium laptop designs. This reflects a wider trend in the tech industry, where manufacturers are making premium devices easier to repair and maintain over the long term.
The laptop’s security features include local processing for critical workloads, hardware-based security for firmware and passwords, and Windows Hello facial recognition. According to Microsoft, maintaining AI functions on the device can enhance privacy and lessen reliance on cloud infrastructure for certain apps.
The Surface Laptop Ultra will be available in Platinum and a new Nightfall color option. Microsoft has not shared pricing details yet, but the laptop is expected to launch later this year once the required regulatory approvals are in place.


The announcement comes as competition in the AI PC market continues to grow. More companies are building laptops and desktops that can run advanced AI tools directly on the device, giving users faster responses, lower latency, and greater control over their data.
