Framework has unveiled an OCuLink 8i Dev Kit for the Laptop 16, making it the first notebook with an exposed PCIe x8 interface delivering up to 128Gbps for external GPUs. The direct link offers far higher bandwidth than Thunderbolt or USB4 eGPU setups and removes much of the overhead seen in those solutions.
Unlike Thunderbolt-based docks, the OCuLink connection ties straight into the PCIe bus. This results in lower latency and more consistent performance during gaming, rendering, and other GPU-heavy workloads, bringing external GPU performance closer to what desktop systems can achieve, as covered in laptops for video editing.
Framework is offering the setup as a three-part kit. It includes an expansion bay adapter for the Laptop 16, a Graphics Module dock that allows Framework’s own GPU modules to run externally, and a PCIe dock that supports standard desktop add-in cards such as GPUs, capture cards, and high-speed networking hardware used in AI workstation builds.
The setup is not plug-and-play. It requires an external power supply, enclosure hardware, and manual configuration. The connection is also not hot-swappable, meaning the system must be powered off before connecting or disconnecting components.
OCuLink carries PCIe data only, without USB or power delivery, which differs from USB4-based expansion solutions. That trade-off removes convenience features but enables higher raw throughput and avoids the bandwidth limits associated with Thunderbolt-based eGPU solutions.
The Dev Kit also gives Laptop 16 owners more flexibility with upgrades, a growing trend in modular laptop design. Existing Framework GPU modules can be repurposed outside the system, allowing users to switch between mobile and desk setups without replacing hardware.
Alongside the Dev Kit, Framework has updated the Laptop 16 with a new one-piece haptic touchpad and keyboard. Both are optional upgrades scheduled to ship in June. A new Ryzen 5 340 configuration has also been added, lowering the entry price to $1,249 for the DIY Edition and $1,599 for pre-built systems.
Framework has not confirmed pricing for the OCuLink Dev Kit. Availability is expected later this year.
