Keeping fast project files on SSDs and storing completed work on large hard drives usually means connecting more than one external enclosure. The TerraMaster D8 Hybrid 2 puts both types of storage into a single desktop unit with four SATA drive bays, four M.2 NVMe SSD slots, and support for as much as 152TB of total capacity.
The storage layout gives each drive type a different job. NVMe SSDs can hold editing projects, virtual machines, and files that need quick access. The SATA bays can store backups, finished videos, photo collections, surveillance recordings, and other large files that do not need SSD speeds. Everything stays in one enclosure instead of being split across separate devices.
Connection is through USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C with 10Gbps bandwidth. TerraMaster rates the enclosure for read speeds of up to 1,020MB/s with a single NVMe SSD. Four hard drives running through software RAID can reach about 980MB/s, giving large file transfers much less waiting time than a traditional hard drive enclosure. The USB connection is compatible with USB 3.0, USB 3.1, USB 3.2, USB4, and Thunderbolt 3, 4, and 5 devices.
This model replaces several parts of the previous D8 Hybrid. The power button now sits on the front panel for easier access. TerraMaster has added TPM (TerraMaster Power Management), a new power management feature created for its USB DAS products. The enclosure has a redesigned airflow path and a Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) cooling fan rated for more than 50,000 hours of operation.
Installing drives no longer requires a screwdriver. SATA drives slide into Push-Lock trays that secure them in place with a simple press. The M.2 compartment opens from the side, where SSDs are secured with hand-tightened screws. The design is useful for anyone who upgrades storage regularly or swaps drives between different projects.
The D8 Hybrid 2 takes a different approach to RAID than the earlier model. It does not provide built-in hardware RAID. All eight drives operate independently, while RAID management is left to Windows, Linux, compatible NAS platforms, or third-party software. For many users, this means more freedom to choose their preferred RAID setup instead of relying on the enclosure itself.
The enclosure works with Windows, macOS, and Linux without installing drivers. It supports NTFS, APFS, EXT4, FAT32, and exFAT, making it easy to move drives between different operating systems. Windows users receive TPC Backupper for scheduled, incremental, and differential backups, while macOS users can continue using Time Machine.
TerraMaster has not limited the D8 Hybrid 2 to desktop PCs. It can expand storage on compatible TerraMaster NAS devices running TOS 5 and TOS 6, where it supports storage pools, RAID configuration, and snapshots. Compatibility extends to Windows Server, Linux, Proxmox, TrueNAS, and Unraid, giving the enclosure a place in home labs, business storage, and creative workstations.

The enclosure measures 222 × 179 × 154 mm, weighs 1.9 kg, and is cooled by a 120 mm smart fan with a rated noise level of 21 dB(A). The retail package contains a USB Type-C cable, power adapter, quick installation guide, and a two-year warranty.
