A former Rockstar Games producer John Ricchio has explained why the studio often delays the PC port of major titles like GTA 6. With GTA 6 pre-orders now available for console players, PC gamers are still awaiting a launch window. The lack of a simultaneous PC launch is a familiar pattern for fans waiting on the official release date.
Ricchio shared these details in a new interview on the Kiwi Talkz YouTube channel, highlighting the challenges of multi-platform development. He noted that optimizing software for Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation consoles is more straightforward because of their fixed hardware specifications. On the other hand, the PC market includes a wide range of hardware configurations that require extra development time to support.

According to Ricchio, it is always better for developers to build software within console constraints first and then scale up for PC. Shrinking a massive game to fit weaker hardware is much harder than extending it for faster hardware. Even a wealthy studio like Rockstar has to manage limited human and financial resources during production.
The company previously chose to delay the PC version of Red Dead Redemption, which arrived about 14 years (about 168 months) after its initial console debut. Ricchio explained that this was a strategic business choice, since spending resources on a PC port early in development means taking resources away from other features.
This explanation contrasts with comments from Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, who recently claimed that the development teams have unlimited financial, creative, and human resources. Regardless of the internal resources, the upcoming title is expected to have a massive open world and smarter AI-powered non-playable characters.
Tech analysts at Digital Foundry hope that the PC version might not be too far behind the console launch. They believe that recent screenshots show a level of visual detail that is not possible on the current PS5 or Xbox hardware.
