One Plus Open: Release Date, Price, Specs

Nowadays, all the mobile companies are bringing their foldable phones to the market, like Samsung’s Z Fold series phone, which has been in the market for a long time. One Plus has also launched its first Fold in the market. The phone looks quite premium and looks different from other foldable phones.

All the foldable phones that have come onto the market have created a lot of buzz in the beginning, but with time, people have become disappointed with them. Because the durability of a foldable phone is not high, OnePlus has claimed that along with the performance of this foldable phone, its durability is also good, for which its Fold has been tested by opening and closing it 1 million times.

In this article, we will discuss this foldable phone and test it to see how well it lives up to the claims of One Plus so that you can know everything before buying this new phone.

OnePlus Open Release Date and Price:

OnePlus revealed its new and first foldable phone at its live event on October 19, and the phone is available for purchase starting October 26.

The 16GB RAM and 512GB storage variant of the phone is priced at $1,699, which is quite high, but it is $100 less than the Z Fold 5, which retails for $1,799. Its price is not budget-friendly, but its display is bigger than that of other foldable phone competitors.

This price is not fixed; this price is at the time of writing this article, and this price is $1,699 in the US, but if you are not from the US, then this price may be different in your country. The price keeps increasing and decreasing with time. That’s why when you plan to buy this phone, check once by visiting the official website of One Plus or a famous e-commerce website like Amazon.

OnePlus Open Design:

OnePlus Open has introduced a unique and attractive design that makes it different from the foldable phones running in the market. The most striking feature is the camera design at the back, which appears to be raised, and this presented circular module occupies one-third of the back panel. Apart from the three camera lenses on the back, there is a subtle Hasselblad H for added style. There is a gap between its cover glass and lens, which makes it look like a watch.

It comes in colors with different weights. The green version weighs 245 grams, while the black version is slightly lighter than the green version at 239 grams. The phone is foldable, but when you close the fold, it looks like a normal phone, which makes it different from other foldable phones on the market. When the Samsung foldable phone is folded, it does not look like a normal phone.

Its foldable hinge is not too hard and is much softer than other foldable phones, which makes it comfortable to open and close repeatedly. It opens only after opening the fold 45 degrees, whereas it has to be opened approximately 135 degrees to open completely.

Often, the durability of foldable phones is not high, which is why people do not like foldable phones because there is a gap between the screen when the fold is opened and closed repeatedly. OnePlus says that its hinge has been tested by opening and closing it one million times, which is much more than all other foldable phones.

Its build quality seems premium because premium material has been used to make it. Its frame and chassis are made of cobalt molybdenum alloy and titanium alloy, which are said to be aerospace-grade materials that are lighter and much stronger. These aerospace-grade materials are stronger than stainless steel. Its hinge is 50% thinner than its competitors, making it feel lighter than phones and foldable phones.

To mitigate potential durability issues, OnePlus has included features like drainage holes in the hinge and a dispersed water-repellent treatment on internal components. Despite these measures, long-term sustainability concerns remain, as the technology is still relatively new. It lacks the IPX68 rating for water resistance, receiving splashproof status only with an IPX4 rating.

Its outer display is protected by the ceramic guard that OnePlus offers in almost all its phones, which is 20% stronger than the Gorilla Glass Victus. The back of the black edition is a plastic layer covered with black vegan leather, making the phone look more premium while providing more grippiness and being fingerprint-resistant. Meanwhile, the Emerald Dusk edition has matte glass at the back, which makes it a little heavier than the black one.

Its dimensions measure 153.4 x 143.1 x 5.8 mm when open and 153.4 x 73.3 x 11.7 mm when closed.

OnePlus Open Display:

Since it is a foldable phone, it has two excellent displays, with both screens being LTPO3 OLED panels. Its inner screen size is 7.82 inches, while the cover screen size is 6.31 inches. Both are full-screen displays with premium features like 10-bit color depth, dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and 240Hz touch response. The resolution of its internal display is 2,440 x 2,268 pixels, and the resolution of the cover screen is 2,484 x 1,116 pixels. The pixel density of the cover screen is slightly higher than that of the foldable screen, where the foldable is 426ppi while the cover screen is 431ppi.

At the time of launch, it was said to have a maximum brightness of 1,400 nits and a peak brightness of 2,800 nits, but when tested, the maximum brightness for the foldable screen was 590 nits, and for the cover display, it was 561 nits.

It has three refresh rate modes: Auto, high, and standard. The advantage of all three refresh rates is that they can be used according to the battery; to save battery, you can use it at 60Hz, whereas it always uses the maximum refresh rate of 120Hz.

Its display shows colors in different ways. There are three color modes – Natural, Pro, and Vivid. Natural looks good with mostly accurate colors, Pro is super accurate, and Vivid has slightly cooler colors. You can also adjust the white temperature in Vivid mode.

Both its displays support HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision. There are also features to enhance scenes with Image Sharpener, Video Color Boost, and Bright HDR video mode. Kyuki Image Sharpener makes low-quality photos and videos clearer, Video Color Boost extends color range, and Bright HDR Video mode enhances HDR videos.

OnePlus Open Camera:

It has three cameras on the back, including a 48MP primary camera, a 48MP ultrawide/macro camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera with 3x optical and 6x in-sensor magnification. As it has two screens, it has a selfie camera on both screens, a 32MP camera on the cover screen, and a 20MP camera on the foldable display.

The sensors of its three rear cameras are different; the sensor of the primary camera is 52MP, which uses a Sony sensor, and it has Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). The sensor of the ultrawide camera is 48MP, and the sensor of the telephoto camera is 64MP.

Photos taken with the primary camera deliver high-quality images with impressive detail, balanced colors, and good sharpness, while photos were taken at 2x zoom also deliver good quality, producing better details and colors in the images.

Its telephoto camera, with 3x zoom, takes stunning photos with the most incredible detail, vibrant colors, and realistic Bokeh. However, when taking pictures at 6x zoom, the images come out a little soft but are still of high quality. In low light conditions, Night Mode on the primary camera captures some of the best night photos with high detail, wide dynamic range, and realistic colors.

Its ultrawide camera captures wide-angle shots with good detail and sharpness, and it produces crystal-clear photos even when taken at close range. It also has three portrait mode zoom levels, providing a natural look for different types of portraits.

As for selfies, the 32MP camera on the cover screen produces photos with good dynamic range and accurate colors, but they are a bit blurry. The 20MP selfie camera on the foldable display produces clear pictures, but details are reduced due to upscaling.

OnePlus Open Battery

OnePlus, its first foldable phone, OnePlus Open, has provided a battery with a capacity of 4,805mAh, which is disappointing for a phone with two screens. I was expecting a better battery than this for a new dual-screen phone. This battery capacity is average because, nowadays, most phones provide batteries of this capacity.

It has a 67W Super VOOC charger. This phone supports fast Charging, so it charges from 0% to 100% in around 45 minutes, while from 0% to 45% takes 15 minutes and to 80% takes 30 minutes, which is relatively fast.

The best thing about this phone is that different battery features have been given to accommodate its battery. When you turn on power saving mode, it prevents the battery from draining quickly, while in standby mode, it deactivates the apps running in the background. Its best feature is the optimized charging mode. Its advantage is that if you turn it on before putting the mobile on charging at night, it will charge the mobile quickly from 0% to 80%, after which it will switch off.

Final Words:

This phone is good in almost every area, whether it is its performance or its design. The only negative point of the phone is its price as it is not exactly budget-friendly.

Its design looks premium, especially its back design, which looks like a watch. Good material has been used to make the phone’s body, which seems strong, but still, it is lighter than all the other competitors’ foldable phones.

Its back camera is excellent and takes very clear and sharp photos. Even when the image is zoomed in, the quality of the photo remains almost fine. Its camera works well even in night mode, but when pictures are taken with both its selfie cameras, the image does not come out as clear as other foldable phones.

Its battery is almost fine, but the capacity is slightly less than that of a foldable phone. The battery supports fast charging so that the phone gets charged quickly so that when its battery runs out, there is no need to wait too long to charge it again. The best thing about it is that it has an optimized charging mode, so if you turn it on before charging at night, it automatically switches off after fast charging from 0 to 80%. This feature increases battery life.
